Battersea Power Station, Phase 2, London, UK

Overview

WilkinsonEyre’s proposed design for the Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station is consistent with and sympathetic to Sir Gilbert Scott’s masterpiece, with the chimneys and turbine halls remaining dominant features of the building. Whilst respecting the integrity of the historic landmark, the mixed-use commercial development comprises extensive retail facilities and restaurants, 60-room boutique hotel, state-of-the-art events space, villas, apartments, penthouses and large office floors, with Apple’s leasing 46,000m²office accommodation over 6 floors.

Key Design Features

  • By introducing design features such as a full-height glass void behind the southern wall, a vast central atrium and open and unobstructed turbine halls, the power station’s sense of scale and visual drama has been retained.

  • In addition to the building fabric and the 4 chimneys, extensive parts of the existing historic building have been retained and are carefully integrated with the new contemporary design.

  • A 6-storey atrium provides extensive daylight and natural ventilation capabilities to the surrounding office accommodation, that are served via a mixed-mode ventilation system.

  • Due to the mixed-use assets, a key design strategy, to minimises loss of area due to core sizes, was to sandwich the ventilation plant at the heart of the building’s ‘section’, serving directly the office accommodation above and the extensive retail and events spaces below, with fresh air and exhaust air connections directly above the turbine halls.

  • A centralised on-site energy centre will serve the entire building.
